Central student organizes sports combine for local athletes
When Grand Junction High School sophomore Austin Lewis wanted to get his athletic stats out to prospective scouting companies, he came to find that the closest ones that used electronic timers were in Arizona and Texas. He could have gone to Denver, but with hand timing, he felt it just wasn’t as accurate, and began his mission to start his own sports combine here in Grand Junction. After going through all the necessary paperwork to start his own non-profit, Western Rockies Sports Combine (WRSCombine), he started planning for the March 3 event that will take place at Stocker Stadium at 8 a.m. But his generosity didn’t stop at just having a combine in town to help athletes. He has decided to take all the proceeds from the event and donate them to the Mesa County Junior Football Association.
Austin has reached out to many local and state organizations to assist with his combine. He wrote letters to members of the Denver Broncos, and has recruited Colorado Mesa University football Head Coach Chad Barlow, as well as members of the local Gladiators football team to help make the combine a successful event. “They are going to help coordinate events at the combine, as well as compete,” Austin said.
