Family Health West to invest $1.5 M on new imaging facility, MRI machine
Family Health West has broken ground to add a 1,800 sq. foot building on the south side of the hospital next to the emergency entrance.
Angelina Salazar, Development & Customer Support Director said “the new building will house a brand new state of the art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine.” Family Health West currently utilizes a mobile MRI but it is only available to the hospital on Fridays. Once their new building is completed and the new GE MRI machine is installed, they will be able to provide high quality MRI’s Monday through Friday. Family Health West is the only medical facility in Fruita to offer full MRI, Mammogram and Bone Density Scan services. This means that Fruita residents will not have to drive miles to have an image taken.
The 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner is considered the industry standard and the High Field MRI scanner is used to view all parts of the body, especially the internal organs, brain, spine, and joints. The scan takes about 20 minutes, depending on the size of the area being viewed. The 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner can scan patients with surgically implanted hardware with less artifact than the 3 Tesla scanner.
The addition of the new machine will necessitate hiring additional staff to accommodate the increased service schedule. They are currently looking to hire a full time MRI Tech.
Michelle Angelo, Director of Radiology, said “the new facility will also house the Mammogram and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for Bone Density testing.”
Angelo went on to say “Having all the imaging services available in one location will add to the convenience and quality of customer service the hospital and staff strive to provide to their patients. This constitutes a major investment by the hospital to better serve the community.”
The project has been in the planning and development stage for close to one and a half years. Ground was broken August 2 and estimated completion is scheduled for the end of October.
