GJFD fights more than fire with Pink October
By Kathleen Goddeyne -
The Grand Junction Fire Department (GJFD) will be sporting a different look for the month of October. The GJFD firefighters will be joining over 900 Fire Departments and Emergency Agencies across the country by showing their support to raise awareness for the ongoing fight against cancer by wearing special Pink Uniform T-shirts. Limited edition Pink T’s will be available to the public for $20 and can be purchased at the administration office at 333 West Ave. #D in Grand Junction.
“The community is going to get used to seeing us in pink in the month of October,” said GJFD Fire Chief, Ken Watkins. “The request (to participate in Pink October) came from our firefighters. They were affected by cancer and suggested it.”
All proceeds from the Pink T’s will go to “Delaney Donates.”
Delaney Clements was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and is now in remission. He new mission through “Delaney Donates” is to keep faith, pay it forward, and help others with the emotional and in some cases financial support needed to cope with this devastating disease.
“We are donating the funds directly to her and she’s out there paying it forward,” GJFD firefighter, Derek Trombetta said. “We want to champion the cause. We’ve also been affected by cancer and it’s something we hold very near and dear to our hearts.”
Depending on the patient, the money raised by the GJFD will provide care packages consisting of toys, travel games, books, puzzles, stuffed animals, chapstick, lotion, water bottles, and gas and groceries gift cards.
Delaney chooses which items will go in the care packages for other cancer patients.
“I pick ones (toys and games) that I like to play with and some other games my friends like to play with too,” said 9-year-old Delaney Clements.
Delaney plans to make care packages for adults as well as other children.
“She likes to pick activities to keep you busy. Chemo is a long process,” Wendy Campbell, Delaney’s mother said.
