Man sells ads, not for the chamber
By Kathleen Goddeyne -
The Fruita Chamber of Commerce sent an email to all of its members on Friday, Nov. 30 stating that a man has been contacting members to sell directory ads and collect credit card information. A printed letter and phone calls have also been gone out to members to ensure the distribution of information.
According to Shauna Davies, newly appointed Fruita Chamber of Commerce Director, River City Publishing of Peoria, Illinois has been selling advertisement space in a Fruita Visitors Guide and saying that he is a chamber representative.
Davies looked into the matter and contacted the publishing company herself. After finding the representative soliciting in the area, Davies explained the situation brought up by her members.
The man denied the accusations to which Davies replied, “I believe my members. If you are representing yourself as a chamber representative, you need to cease and desist.”
The publisher of the company apologized and is looking into the incident, claiming they’ve been selling in the area for two years.
One member gave the representative credit card information and after checking records, the River City Publishing representative only charged the amount discussed with the member.
Davies called the police for more information.
“They said it’s not fraudulent if people are getting something for their money,” Davies said.
In this case, people are getting something for their money, even if it isn’t what they intended to purchase.
Davies encourages any members with questions or concerns to call the office at 970-858-3894.
